| Our Review: |
One of the most played games on my computer, this game rocks hard. If you don't know the story of Ghostbusters 2, it is about a river of slime under the city of New York, making its way towards the New York Museum of Art to bring to life one nasty SOB of a painting - Vigo the Carpathian. You can read all about that at the beginning of the game. You have to collect slime and find tunes that the slime likes, and fight ghosts to get enough money to fund Egon's Slime Blower. Then you get to walk the Statue of Liberty to the Art Museum with (YES!) a Nintendo(tm) Controller to bust in and fight Vigo.
How To Play
(I will recommend running the little 'install.bat' file before playing so you can select your input device, and choose adlib sound for true MIDI glory. This was probably the first game where I changed from keyboard to mouse.)
Apprehending Apparitions
One part of the game is fighting ghosts, and you start off in the courtroom with the two Scoleri brothers tearing it up oldschool. On the top-left is a thermometer which shows how hot your pack is. If it gets too hot it won't fire until it cools down again. On the top-right is a little meter which shows how much more you have to zap the ghost to get them into the trap. Once it is almost full, the ghost will move to the center of the screen and when its completely full the ghost will be sucked into the trap. The ghosts you are trying to catch will also be firing little white balls at you most of the time, and some blue version of Slimer will be throwing blue balls. If you get hit by 3 white balls, you lose and the level is over. If you get hit by 6 blue balls, it's also level-over for you. The ball count is on the top-left of the screen near the thermometer. If you lose the Scoleri Brothers level, it doesn't matter so much, it just means that you start the game $10k in debt. If you beat them, then happy holidays and the judge drops the charges.
When fighting ghosts other than the Scoleri brothers, there are a few differences. If you get splodged by the ghosts' balls, your ghostbuster will be sent to Parkview Mental Hospital. There's also a cashometer at the top of the screen counting down to how much money you will earn from the job - damage more stuff, lose more money. If the counter hits 0, then the level is over and your ghostbuster gets sent to Parkview. If all 4 ghostbusters are in Parkview there, then it is game over... You can, however, break them out.
The Main Screen
There are 5 places to put the cursor when you're at the main screen.
1) Top-left there is an absentee chart. Who is IN, and who is OUT (ie stuck in Parkview). If someone's OUT, you can click on this chart to visit Parkview and try to rescue your buddy(ies).
2) Top-right there is a door which by clicking takes you out to get slime from the river under the city.
3) Below that is a computer, clicking it does nothing, it will just tell you what your current balance is while the cursor is over it. While the cursor is not over the computer, it will display text reminding you what the 'button' the cursor is on actually does.
4) Beside the computer is a CD player, once you've got a slime sample you have to use this to find smooth tunes that the slime grooves and funks out to. When you click on it, click one of the green buttons (a track) and then the red button (play). If the slime likes your style, it'll be chillin' happily and turning orange. If not, a little angry explosion will tell you what it thinks of your tastes in music.
5) The slime blower. Later in the game, when you've earnt enough money from catching ghosts, Egon will build a slime blower. Once you found 3 good tunes that the slime likes, you can click the slime blower to take the Statue of Liberty for a walk.
Ghostbuster Bust-Out
A fun, but sometimes tricky part of the game. You have to abseil down Parkview Mental hospital using the cursor keys or mouse (up and down to go up and down the rope). Click/press to jump. The longer you hold the button, the bigger the jump. When you've found a window that you'd like to bust into (one with a shadow, preferably :), stop moving, lean to the side that the window is on using the mouse or cursor keys, then click and hold for long enough. It may take a few goes but eventually you'll get in. If there's a dude standing there in a green suit, you'll give him a hi-five and you'll both end up back on the rope. If that's all the ghostbusters saved, climb down to the bottom where your getaway vehicle is waiting.
However, in the likely event that your ghostbuster buddy is NOT in the room you broke into, you will find that you are greeted with some mental hospital staff. Up and down on the cursor keys and mouse will make you run forward and back, and left and right will make you 'dodge'. I just stand there and wait for the staff to run at me, then at the last second I lean into them. If they catch you, that's another Ghostbuster in Parkview. If you avoid them, great!... now all you have to do is run up to the window, and jump out to the swinging rope by clicking/pressing. If you miss, one of the staff members will catch you by your ankles and that will be another Ghostbuster in Parkview. If you catch it, then you're back to square one... abseiling Parkview looking for your trapped Ghostbuster friend.
Ghostbusters Under The City
Big Libby needs juice, and as Venkman says she's not going to run on water. So you need to go down into the old train tunnels and get slime. In this scene, Slimer is flying around, and so are other ghosts. Get hit by them 3 times and you fall into the slime. There is also a hand popping out of the slime which will grab you by the legs every now and then. Shake him off my moving the mouse or pressing the cursor keys. If he keeps grabbing you, you're eventually going to fall in, so the key is to be quick. To get slime you need to move down as far as possible and then click/press and hold to start collecting slime. At the top-right is your vial of slime and how full it is, and top-left shows how many ghosts have smacked you across the face. Once the vial is full, move up and go home.
You can actually run through the game quickly by only getting on slime sample and then going to fight ghosts. Egon stays behind and says he'll run a test, and when you get back you'll find he has used one of the CD tracks, found a bad result, but at the same time didn't destroy the slime sample. So you can keep fighting ghosts while he uses the same sample over and over (and keeps finding bad tracks over and over). By the time all the ghosts have been caught, there will only be 3 tracks left to test. Suprise, suprise... They're the groovy tracks. I've even tried to make Egon find the good tracks for me by doing some testing first and then leaving the rest to him, but he just finds all the bad ones and then stops running tests. Damn slacker.
Walking Big Libby
This part of the game took me a while to figure out. Let's say, from a standstill, you want to lift the left foot. Move the mouse left/press the left button. Once the foot is lifted (for the most part you won't be able to see because you'll be lifting the foot that's behind Libby), you can move the mouse up and down/press the up and down buttons to move the foot forward and back, then to put the foot down move the mouse right/press the right button. Keep moving the mouse/keys right to lift the right foot, and repeat the process, except you put the right foot down by moving left. Pretty much you're just drawing out a huge repetative S-type squiggly pattern with the mouse. On the bottom right of the screen you'll see five red bars that slowly turn blue depending on how many cars you crush. Crushing cars drains Libby's juice, and on the right shows you how much time you have left. You have to get to the Museum before midnight. |
